TRAINING RESTARTS IN AUGUST - SEE MATCH CENTRE

Another new tournament for us in 2008 at Corringham on a sunny Saturday spoilt yet again by one decision which, to say the least, was of dubious standard.

True to form we failed to get out of the starting blocks for the first game but came alive in the second and third to win both. The fourth game left us needing a win and nothing less to go through to the semi final and it looked a real possibility as we went one nil up.

Unfortunately the Corringham club official, refereeing a match with Corringham opposition decided that he could clearly identify the ball having crossed the goal line whilst standing on the halfway line!

With the Laws of the Game saying that the ball has to be wholly and completely over the line and yet barely an inch actually made it that far it is impossible to get any justification for such a blatantly poor - and indeed crucial - decision.

We take defeat well when it is deserved - see below - but situations like this are hard to accept.

Last year we were unlucky not to progress, at the least, to the semi finals of the Rushden & Diamonds tournament, missing out on goal difference. We were of course without a recognised goalkeeper at the time but on the face of it a complete squad would have gone further. One year on and we entered the competition full of confidence but, unfortunately, this was misplaced.

We were overwhelmed in every game by far superior opposition. It seems that with the cancellation of the Jubilee Cup (usually the following week and for the elite league champions) the stronger teams had transferred over to the Diamond Cup.

There is no doubt that the opposition in each of our games were far superior, we have no complaints. Indeed it was a good day out, despite the rain and the results, just to see the quality of our opposition. Even more pleasing was the attitude of our opponents - no glory seekers, no winding up, just quality football which was a pleasure to watch.

A blisteringly hot morning at Leigh as the team had their second tournament with the only 11 a side event, giving every available player the chance to participate.

The third game against Copeland, although resulting in a heavy loss, was played in a sporting manner. credit to our opposition who did not over celebrate and quite clearly were able to outperform in terms of fitness. At that stage Contrast were down to a bare eleven with Daniel Smith, Liam Carter and Zac Parker all having suffered injury. Those left on the pitch found the pace just a touch too much and the final whistle didn’t come as soon as it could have.

The most satisfying result was the 1 - 0 win (courtesy of William Stewart) over Grays Athletic who two seasons ago were our league opposition before they moved from the Chelmsford League to the Echo League. Despite having lost two of the three injured players by that stage Grays were clearly taken aback by the relentless effort from Contrast, it is just a shame that this determination wasn’t evident from the start.

Which brings us to the first game against Redbridge. A stunning strike by Sharunas Kudzinskas put Contrast 1 - 0 ahead before Redbridge hit back convincingly to take the match. What was not convincing was the eligibility of Redbridge players to participate given that some had been seen the previous Monday playing for Lakeview! It wasn’t necessary to recognise the faces - it only needed a few minutes to identify the aggression and poor sportsmanship which resulted in yet another Contrast player being sidelined for the remainder of the tournament and possibly in doubt for the next.

Well done to the players who took part in the Billericay Colts tournament on Bank Holiday Monday. Four matches played, two won two lost.

It is a pity that there are other clubs around who lose sight of what grassroots football is about. If the rules of the competition state a maximum squad size of 8 that does not, by any stretch of the imagination mean that you can pick any 8 from 9. Nor does it mean that when you are rightfully reduced to a squad of 8 you can then show aggression which sends an opponent off to A & E.

And do you really think that sending your squad which is made up of academy players is in the best interests of the game?

A black mark also to the organisers who, despite being made aware of the blatant cheating, took no action despite being a Charter Standard Community Club. The offenders should have been disqualified from the competition and Contrast would then have, on merit, been in the semi finals.

Contrast is built on foundations of sportsmanship, fair play and honesty. We are committed to that ethos.

Thanks for another well competed and sporting friendly. You certainly were the better side in the second half and Mark and I learned a lot as we contemplate possible life in division three next season. You, your boys, linesman and parents were all a credit.
